Lasix i.e. Furosemide medication is used for the same purpose. Lasix is a potent diuretic water pill, which works effectively in eliminating water and salt from the body. In the kidney organ, the salts that are composed of chloride and sodium, water and other small molecules are normally filtered out of the blood and into the tubules of the kidney and this filtered fluid becomes urine ultimately. Lasix i.e. Furosemide works by blocking the absorption of sodium, chloride, water etc. from the filtered fluid in the kidney tubules which ultimately causes a profound increase in the output of the urine i.e. diuresis.

The diuretic effect of Furosemide can cause body water and electrolyte depletion. Therefore careful medical supervision is absolutely necessary during the complete course. Generally, Lasix treats Edema i.e. fluid retention in the people with congestive liver disease, heart failure or a kidney disorder such as Nephrotic syndrome. This medication is also used to treat hypertension i.e. high blood pressure.

The FDA had approved Furosemide in the year, 1982 in the month of July.

Follow the directions exactly as suggested by the doctor and also do not forget to read the prescription label provided to you with the medicine. Usually it is single dose for both, adults and children. If you wish to use the medication in children, consult your pediatrician before doing so.

The most common side effects noticed are: low blood pressure, dehydration and electrolyte depletion,. The less common side effects include, itching, difficulty in breathing, drowsiness, jaundice, ringing in ears i.e. Tinnitus, fever, light sensitivity, swelling, yellowing of eyes or skin, rashes, Pancreatitis, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, impaired hearing, bruising, sore throat, dry mouth or thirst, anemia, easy bleeding, vomiting, numbness or tingling sensations in legs and arms, fainting, seizures, muscle cramps, weakness, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, decrease in the amount of urine and other blood disorders.

Call your doctor if you have any of these unusual problems or some new problems arises, while taking this medication which may appear severe or persistent to you. Consult your doctor immediately and get treated accordingly.

Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. So, keep an eye on what all medicines do you consume during the course.
Some drugs like Cisplatin, Aliskiren, NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen, Indomethacin, Amphotericin B, Digoxin, Muscle relaxants such as Tubocurarine, Norepinephrine, Tobramycin, Aminoglycoside antibiotics, Corticosteroids, Aspirin, Sucralfate, Cholestramine, and Colestipol etc. can interact and produce life threatening results. So be very alert with these types of drugs and with their components too.

Also do inform your doctor about any other medication you may be taking in any other form. So, please consult your doctor and get more information on the interactions of the Lasix medication and take precautions accordingly. Keep all appointments with your doctor during the complete course. And never allow anyone else take your medication unless they are prescribed by their doctors themselves. Also inform your doctor if you have been the victim of any serious and major diseases. Without consulting your doctor, please do not take any OTC medications on your own, as they may interact with the current medicine and produce some life threatening results.

If you missed the dose, do take the dose immediately provided that there is ample of time in between the next dose. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Never double your doses to cope up with the missed dose. And in case, if you miss the two consecutive doses consult to your doctor or physician for guidance and continue further. Try your best not to miss any of your doses.

Furosemide is a powerful diuretic. Furosemide is used to treat excessive fluid accumulation and swelling edema of the body caused by heart failure, cirrhosis, chronic kidney failure and Nephrotic syndrome. It is sometimes used in conjunction with other blood pressure pills to treat high blood pressure i.e. hypertension.
This medicine may also be used to treat other purposes, but be sure to confirm it from your doctor.

Lasix tablets should be stored at cool room temperature. Keep the medicine in a light-resistant tight container and away from heat, dampness or direct light. Check Expiry date without fail. Keep all medicines away from women, newborns, children and pets. Moisture or Heat may cause the break down of the medicine. In any case, do not store the medicine in the bathroom. However, some manufacturers vary in their storage recommendations. Therefore storage conditions for each product should be clarified with your pharmacist. Dispose the outdated medicines safely.

Following precautions must be taken during consuming generic Lasix:

1. Let your doctor know about your complete medical history, if you have or have ever had any severe diseases like heart failure, kidney disease, strokes, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, untreated mineral imbalance, gout, lupus, especially Anuria i.e. inability to make urine, high cholesterol or a history of alcohol abuse or any other major disease.
Also inform if you are breast feeding, had given delivery to a baby, any recent surgery or are receiving any kind of other injections etc.

2. Tell your doctor that what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking or even any OTC like nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, herbal products etc. that you may be intaking, because there is possibility that they may interact with the Lasix medication and reproduce harmful results.

3. Inform your doctor if you consume alcohol or any alcohol containing beverages. The Lasix medication can add drowsiness, so caution is suggested while driving and operating heavy machinery etc. For elderly people more caution is advised.

4. If you have to undergo any surgery, major operation or any dental procedure, inform your surgeon, dentist or doctor, that you are taking Lasix medication.

5. Let your doctor or the physician know about your any kind allergies. They may be any food, medicine or any other drugs or composition.

6. Do not share the Lasix with others unless they are prescribed by the doctor themselves. If the medicine is no longer in use or is outdated, discard it immediately after checking with your doctor or your pharmacist.

7. Always carry your some kind of identity that specifies your name, your medical condition, your medicine, your and health care professional’s contact number in case of emergency.

8. Try to avoid exposure to the extreme sun, as this medicine can make you more sensitive to heat and light. Wear protective clothing when outdoors. And Hyper sensitive patients are suggested in particular to get up slowly from a seated or lying position, to avoid the feeling of lightheadness and dizziness.

9. Keep the medication out of reach of newborns, children and pets.

10. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding. If you conceive during the course, immediately inform your doctor.

11. Blood uric acid levels can increase during Furosemide treatment but precipitation of acute gout is rare. Furosemide may increase the toxic effect of Aminoglycoside antibiotics on the ear especially in patients with kidney dysfunction. Furosemide reduces the kidney excretion of lithium and can lead to lithium toxicity. Furosemide may impair kidney function when administered together with aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs. Periodic blood tests are performed to monitor kidney function and electrolytes during treatment with Furosemide.

12. Patients allergic to sulfa may also be allergic to Furosemide because of a similarity in the chemical structure of the medications. Furosemide should be avoided in kidney failure. Even though Furosemide is important in treating excess fluid accumulation in patients with cirrhosis sudden loss of fluid and electrolytes in these patients can worsen kidney function and even cause the patient to go into a coma. Furosemide can cause lowering of blood potassium sodium and magnesium levels. Low potassium and magnesium levels can lead to heart rhythm abnormalities especially in patients already taking digoxin Lanoxin.

13. Keep all the appointments with your doctor as the doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects caused to you.

14. Lasix can also affect the blood sugar levels, so if you have diabetes, get your blood sugar levels checked regularly. Lasix can also reduce potassium levels in the blood, for which you could ask the doctor to prescribe a potassium supplement accordingly.

15. Do not discontinue medication on your own. Consult your doctor before doing so.
